Double whammy for Ram Gopal Varma
He announced on Friday, that he would teach everyone the art of ‘quick
and slick’ film-making on a shoe string budget. He even went to the
extent of saying that his online tutorial would help anyone make a movie
that can be screened in theatres. But alas, the virtual classroom which
was to be broadcasted via YouTube could not materialise due to
technical issues. Finally, RGV had to tweet calling off the online
engagement with his fans.
Horror and humour rolled into one
Mention the name Geetanjali to film buffs and what comes to their mind
instantly is the 1989 film by the same name, starring Girija Shettar and
our very own Nagarjuna Akkineni.
Twenty-five years later, ace writer Kona Venkat has come up with a movie
with the same title. And interestingly, the name of the lead star in
this production is actress Anjali, the same name with which Girija
Shettar essayed the role opposite the hero. The resemblance to the name
‘Geetanjali’ ends there.
This time around, it’s Kona Venkat (last remembered for being the writer
for the Ravi Teja-starrer ‘Balupu’) who is the man behind this
‘Geetanjali’. For the record though, he just presents it, while his
friend M.V.V. Satyanarayana produces it under the M.V.V. Cinema banner,
directed by debutant Raj Kiran.
This is primarily a heroine-centric film, of how Anjali the heroine goes
on a quest for truth, to unravel a mystery in her life. And assisting
her in the script are actors Srinivas Reddy, Satyam Rajesh, ‘Shakalaka’
Shankar of ‘Jabardast’ fame. Actor Harshavardhan Rane makes a special
appearance opposite Anjali, in a role that Kona Venkat says is vital.
Interestingly, ‘Geetanjali’ is in a genre where horror-humour have an equal role.
