Overview of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Warning

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of southwestern Japan on January 13, 2025, close to Miyazaki Prefecture. The earthquake was centred at a depth of roughly 36 kilometres (22 miles) and struck at around 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET). The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the impacted areas as a result of this seismic event.

 


Tsunami Advisory Details

Authorities advised citizens to avoid coastal areas after the earthquake because of the possibility of tsunami waves. According to the original advisory, waves could be as high as 1 meter (3.2 feet). According to reports, a tsunami wave of roughly 20 centimetres (0.7 feet) was recorded at Miyazaki Port within 30 minutes of the earthquake.

In addition to Miyazaki Prefecture, the neighbouring Shikoku Island Prefecture of Kochi was also under a tsunami warning. Because of the possibility of higher waves after the initial impact, residents in some coastal areas were advised to evacuate as a precaution.

 


Aftermath and Safety Measures

Late in the evening, officials lifted the tsunami advisory as the situation progressed, but they still urged residents to exercise caution, especially in light of possible aftershocks and other dangers like landslides or falling debris from buildings. They advised people to stay alert and ready, stressing that aftershocks might happen in the days ahead.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or fatalities associated with this earthquake and tsunami event, despite early worries. Monitoring stations reported no anomalies at nearby nuclear facilities, and many areas continued to have electric power.
