HMPV
HMPV = Human metapneumovirus
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a
respiratory virus that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tract.
Discovered in 2001, it belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, closely
related to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). HMPV is a significant cause of
respiratory infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and
immunocompromised individuals.
Symptoms
HMPV symptoms range from mild to
severe and include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
Severe cases can lead to bronchitis
or pneumonia, particularly in vulnerable groups.
Transmission
The virus spreads through
respiratory droplets, close contact with infected individuals, and contaminated
surfaces. The incubation period is 3-5 days.
Treatment
Currently, there is no specific
antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Management focuses on supportive care:
- Hydration
- Fever and symptom management
- Oxygen therapy in severe cases
Prevention
- Regular handwashing
- Wearing masks in crowded places
- Avoiding close contact with sick individuals
- Improving ventilation in indoor spaces
HMPV infections tend to peak in late
winter and early spring, similar to flu and RSV.
