Key Announcements and Features

New Design Language: Liquid Glass

The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 took place from June 9 to June 13, 2025, presenting a variety of updates for Apple's software platforms.

The keynote address, which occurred on June 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. PT, unveiled the most recent developments in Apple's software and technologies.

This year's conference highlighted design, productivity, and the integration of artificial intelligence, concentrating on a cohesive design language and introducing new features across different operating systems.

Operating System Renaming

A major announcement was made regarding the launch of a new visual design language known as Liquid Glass, which will be implemented across all of Apple's operating systems. This design language features transparency and shine effects, with the goal of creating a more dynamic and cohesive user experience across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The new design is inspired by VisionOS, the operating system designed for the Vision Pro headset.

iOS 26: iPhone Updates

Apple is in the process of updating the names of its operating systems, implementing a naming convention based on the year. For instance, iOS 19 will be changed to iOS 26. Similarly, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS will adopt this approach, utilising the year of the update as their identifier.

iOS 26 introduces a more streamlined appearance for the iPhone, featuring subtle yet significant modifications to the interface, such as rounded corners and overlapping elements. The Phone application has undergone a substantial redesign, with scrolling now taking precedence, enabling users to navigate through contacts, recent calls, and voicemail messages all on a single screen. The Messages app is also set to receive new functionalities, including the option to alter the background color for group messages and the capability to conduct polls among members of group chats. Additionally, new screening features have been introduced, such as "unknown senders," which segregates spam messages into a distinct area within Messages.

iPadOS 26: iPad Enhancements

Apple Intelligence has been incorporated into iOS 26, enabling users to visually search for any content displayed on the iPhone screen. For instance, if you encounter an image of a jacket that appeals to you on your social media feed, you can capture a screenshot of your iPhone screen and utilize the new Visual Intelligence image search feature to find similar jackets across the internet and various applications. iPadOS 26 will showcase the Liquid Glass redesign along with many of the new functionalities outlined for iOS 26, such as the updated Phone and Games applications. A distinctive feature of the iPad is the introduction of a new menu bar and windowing capability, which enhances the tablet's user interface to resemble macOS more closely, thereby facilitating multitasking. Users will have the ability to resize windows, snap them into different corners, or temporarily swipe them away. Additionally, the Files app on the iPad will present an improved list view and customizable color options, while a new Preview app is set to debut on iPads, offering native PDF management, annotation, and editing capabilities.

watchOS 26: Apple Watch Updates

watchOS 26 will introduce a visual redesign known as Liquid Glass and will feature Workout Buddy, a tool that analyzes fitness history and offers real-time insights during exercise sessions. Additionally, the Smart Stack on the Apple Watch will receive an update, enhancing the prioritization of information that is most relevant to you based on your daily routine.

macOS Tahoe: Mac Enhancements

The forthcoming macOS Tahoe, which is the latest iteration of Apple's computer operating system, will also incorporate the Liquid Glass design aesthetic. Users will have the ability to create personalized backgrounds, modify the colors of their desktop folders, and even incorporate emojis into them. Furthermore, the iOS Phone application will be accessible on macOS Tahoe, thereby enhancing the calling functionalities of Mac computers. The Shortcuts app will see the introduction of intelligent actions, and Spotlight will become more robust, enabling users to invoke and execute Shortcuts and actions directly from the Spotlight search interface.

visionOS 26: Vision Pro Updates

tvOS 26: Apple TV Updates

visionOS 26 will introduce new features related to Apple Intelligence, spatial experiences, and additional enhancements.

Spatial widgets will be available in VisionOS 26, enabling users to position widgets within their Vision Pro field of view, and these widgets will remain fixed in place as users move about.

A new feature called spatial scenes will utilize AI technology to animate photos, and the headset will also support PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers.

Apple Intelligence and Developer Access

tvOS 26 introduces the Liquid Glass design language to the Apple TV application. A new Profiles feature in Apple TV+ allows users to personalise their viewing experience, while Apple Music on Apple TV is acquiring a karaoke-like functionality.

Additional Features

A primary emphasis of WWDC 2025 was Apple Intelligence, enabling all applications, including those developed by third parties, to access Apple Intelligence. This capability allows non-native applications to utilize AI to improve their functionalities. Furthermore, Apple is providing access for any application to leverage the on-device large language model that underpins Apple Intelligence, thereby granting developers direct access.

Additional significant features include the introduction of a new Games app on iOS, which will function as a central hub for gaming experiences. Apple Maps is undergoing enhancements, such as the ability for the app to learn your daily routine to propose alternative routes, and 'visited places,' which records cities, landmarks, businesses, and more that you have visited. The Wallet app will now accommodate Digital ID, allowing you to create a digital identification that is distinct from your driver's license and passport, which can be utilised to verify your identity in certain locations.
