Shubhanshu Shukla, the
celebrated Indian astronaut
Who he is
Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, he
was raised in a city where he attended City Montessori School, located in Aliganj.
He earned a BSc in Computer Science from NDA in 2005 and
later obtained an MTech in Aerospace Engineering from IISc Bangalore.
Motivated to serve after the Kargil War in 1999, he
enlisted in the IAF in 2006, accumulating over 2,000 flight hours on aircraft
such as the Su-30, MiG-21/29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.
He achieved the rank of Group Captain in March 2024 and
was chosen for both ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission in 2019 and the Axiom-4 missions.
Axiom Mission 4: Historic Journey
The first Indian astronaut to journey to the
International Space Station (ISS), and the second Indian in space after Rakesh
Sharma in 1984.
Launched on June 25, 2025, from Kennedy Space Centre on
the SpaceX Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon.
Crew members include Commander Peggy Whitson (USA),
Mission Specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu
(Hungary).
Experiments & Aims
A significant science mission includes around 60
experiments from 31 different countries.
His experiments with an Indian theme on the ISS consist
of:
Growing fenugreek (methi) and moong daal in a
microgravity environment.
Researching tardigrades, muscle degeneration, and the
concept of "Screens in Space."
Conducting educational STEM demonstrations aimed at
Indian students.
Personal & Proud Moments
Married to Dr. Kamna Shubha Shukla (née Mishra), who is a
dentist and a childhood friend; they are proud parents of one son, who is
celebrated by his wife and family before his launch.
At the launch, he expressed his emotions by saying,
"Jai Hind, Jai Bharat," while giving a sincere patriotic salute.
Significance
Marks India's comeback to human spaceflight after 41
years, building on Rakesh Sharma's groundbreaking mission in 1984.
It enhances global collaborations
(ISRO–NASA–Axiom–SpaceX) and paves the way for Gaganyaan, India's manned
mission scheduled for 2027.
