Early Life and Background

Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka, Punjab, India. He comes from a Punjabi Sikh family; his father, Lakhwinder Singh, is a farmer who once aspired to be a cricketer. Recognizing Shubman's innate talent and enthusiasm for cricket from an early age, Lakhwinder devoted considerable time to his training, bowling numerous balls each day. To further support Shubman's cricketing ambitions, the family moved to Mohali, close to the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, when he was merely eight years old.

 

Domestic Career

Gill's cricketing career took off when he made his List A debut for Punjab during the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He followed this with his first-class debut in November 2017 in the Ranji Trophy against Bengal. He quickly made a name for himself by scoring his first century against Services shortly thereafter. Notably, he achieved his first double-century in first-class cricket with an outstanding score of 268 runs against Tamil Nadu in December 2018.

 

In addition to his domestic achievements, Gill captained India Blue in the Duleep Trophy and India C in the Deodhar Trophy. His leadership abilities were underscored when he became the youngest captain to lead a team in a final at the age of just 20.

 


International Career

Gill made his international debut for India in January 2019 against New Zealand. Since that time, he has become a vital member of the national team across all formats. He gained significant recognition during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup as part of India's squad that finished as runners-up.

 

In One Day Internationals (ODIs), Gill has set remarkable records: he is the fastest player to reach 2000 runs in just 38 innings and is also noted as the youngest cricketer to score a double century at the age of 23.

 

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In the realm of domestic T20 leagues, Gill represents the Gujarat Titans, where he has achieved notable success. He was a key member of the team that clinched the championship in IPL 2022 and earned the Orange Cap in IPL 2023 for being the leading run-scorer, amassing an impressive total of 890 runs, which featured three centuries. His remarkable performance included setting a record for the highest individual score in IPL Playoffs history, with a remarkable 129 runs.

 

As IPL 2024 approaches, Gill has been appointed as the captain of the Gujarat Titans, succeeding Hardik Pandya, who has moved to the Mumbai Indians.

Initiated his international career with an ODI debut in January 2019 and a Test debut in December 2020. 

Contributed significantly to India's landmark Test series victory in Australia during the 2020-21 season, highlighted by a decisive innings of 91 at the Gabba. 

Achieved his first Test century against Bangladesh in December 2022. 

Set a record as the youngest player to score a double century in ODIs, amassing 208 runs against New Zealand in January 2023. 

Secured the Orange Cap as the top run-scorer in IPL 2023, accumulating a total of 890 runs.
