Early Life and Education 

Mathews attended St. Joseph’s College in Colombo, where he began his cricketing career at an early age. He captained the Sri Lankan U-19 team during the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup hosted in Sri Lanka. His List A debut came in September 2005 when he played for Sri Lanka Under-23 against New Zealand A.

 

Domestic Career 

In domestic cricket, Mathews has played for several teams, including the Colombo Cricket Club and Kandy Falcons. He has also been involved in various T20 leagues globally, notably the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he represented teams such as Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors.

 


International Career Highlights 

Mathews made his international debut in November 2008 in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Zimbabwe, followed by his Test debut. Throughout his career, he has participated in key tournaments, including the ICC World Twenty20, where he was part of the 2014 championship-winning team, and reached the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009 and 2012.

 

He marked significant milestones, including his 100th Test match in July 2022. As captain, he led Sri Lanka to triumph in the Asia Cup in 2014. A notable event occurred on November 7, 2023, when Mathews became the first player to be declared timed out without facing a delivery during a group stage match at the ICC Cricket World Cup against Bangladesh.

Mathews is known for his strong batting technique and reliability with both bat and ball. While he originally aspired to be an allrounder, injuries have shifted his focus primarily to batting, although he still provides valuable contributions as a bowler when required.
